Canada Summer Games

The Event

The 2017 Canada Summer Games, officially known as the XXVI Canada Games, were held in Winnipeg, Manitoba from July 28 to August 13, 2017.

Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes.

OUR ROLE

Director, Special Events and Ceremonies, Canada Summer Games (2017)

  • Directed all strategic and operational planning, coordination, budgeting and reporting related to the Host Society’s opening and closing ceremonies, the national cultural festival and the torch relay program for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.
  • Created, developed and produced the free 11-day Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Canada Games Festival and MacDon Family Zone at The Forks.
  • Worked with the Winnipeg Host Society, key sponsors, the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba and government representatives from each province and territory across Canada to showcase regional arts and cultural performances (visitors exceeded 230,000, substantially surpassing attendance targets).
  • Ensured that all special events and ceremonies were integrated into the operational initiatives and priorities determined by 2017 Canada Summer Games host society and board of directors.
  • Provided leadership and oversight to the executive producers of the opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Oversaw event management of the 14 Canada Games Torch Relay events taking place in communities across Manitoba as well as the ceremonial torch lighting events on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Memorial Blvd. in Winnipeg (to reignite the Pan Am Cauldron) and at the sacred site of Manito Api.
  • Engaged in extensive collaborative planning sessions with Canada Games indigenous advisory committee
